From Briefing.com:
Facebook (FB) tumbled after disclosing that Cambridge Analytica mined the data of some 50 million users without their permission. The Energy sector has struggled as the price of crude oil declines.

Countercyclical sectors like consumer staples (-0.2%), utilities (-0.1%), and telecom services (-0.2%) have held up relatively well today. However, their impact is minimal, since they represent just 10% of the broad market. For comparison, the top-weighted technology sector (which is down 2.5%) represents around 25% of the broader market.

Within the consumer staples space, Dow components Procter & Gamble (PG 79.49, +0.52) and Coca-Cola (KO 43.62, +0.16) are up 0.7% and 0.3%, respectively, while the world's largest retailer--Walmart (WMT 87.72, -1.45)--is down 1.6%.

That's a superb graphic Fehro. I've done a screengrab and framed it in my chart art gallery under the caption of "A clear downtrend in a clear longer-timeframe uptrend".

That red (dots) uptrend line is key--and the green channel lines clearly show the force and sustainability of the current downtrend. This move is leaving alot of ResistanceLines above it, as we now pass into the less seasonally-favorable second half of March. Dip buyers beware.

My only guess is that the overnight selling in Hedge Fund favorites along with increasing interest rates has sparked a de-leveraging event. Gandalf kept warning about that all last fall and if you recall there was a target chart showing the various combinations of equity and bond decline that would trigger a significant de-leveraging by the risk parity funds.

I also wonder about the regular hedge funds as we keep reading that the long short funds are gone and a 6% decline in a big holding when you use 50 to 1 leverage (or more) can hurt.

Finally I wonder about my recency and centering biases that a 40 point decline looks like a scary major event. :o

Last big down day was due to Trump, that was March 1.
The perpetual question, does the market make the news or does the news make the market. :)

SPY/SPX wedge noted by fehro and others
Wedge break target is eventually the old feb 9 low
But support is seen at the interim low of 2 march

fehro has company on the bounce concept

"Covered all shorts on ES from Friday and sold all SPX puts earlier. Expect a retrace to 2710-2720 area from near here. Went long ES at 2704.
