I have struggled with the application of stops trading ES. Too tight, and it gets run too quickly. Too wide, and I get caught in a buzzsaw with losses. My trading has been the opposite of what I would like. Losses too large, and gains too small. This day trading thing is tough.

during a consolidation phase (sideways market) range bound zone is best approach.
