Excellent observation, the one significant difference is the July example was in an uptrend.

Maybe caused in part by Bond markets being closed for the holiday= less volitility as a rule. :|

World Elders 14 of 15 red. World volume way down. Made the call this weekend (sideways)- only off .01%, unlike usual. It looks like Spy 138.00 is strong support, but since futures have already spoken then 137.15 and 136.6 are strong. 136.9 is a strong downward channel support point for tomorrow. It looks like the Greek vote was positive, but it did not last.

It was a 3 day downtrend proceeding it. :)
Though I guess you mean the longer trend.

Review to last night's estimates

The o/n session was very small and so the AM estimates would reduce the range.
There was a cabbage indicator this morning as well (cabbage= narrow range choppy day)
Cobra called an narrow range day this morning as soon as an initial range was established - Good call Cobra!!

I watched it for a while and decided he was right and took a long snooze!

That is correct although the fact that the bond market was closed probably had a lot of impact.

Looking at the seasonal P/E change of election years it appears that we can expect increased volatility in December.

Thanks for the chart ClarkW.

It's interesting.
All the other spikes are after a fall - which makes sense.
This one is near a high.

Perhaps others are also looking for a fall (?) as:
earnings are deteriorating
QE3 40-80B per month has had no positive impact on market prices
apple is falling
prices are at a high level vs 2009 lows.
