Centaur Galileo, Sports Betting Hedge Fund Inspired By Mark Cuban, Collapses

Mark Cuban is an undeniable idea machine. But one of his boldest ideas yet may have proven too hot to handle.

Centaur, a London-based investment company, launched its Galileo fund in 2010 based in part because of an idea Cuban proposed in a 2004 blog post -- creating a hedge fund that invested in sports bets. It didn't last very long, however, as the fund appears to have collapsed on Monday, according to Wager Minds.

Cuban's original idea for a fund similar to Galileo revolved around the idea thats sports provided more information to investors than actual American companies.

"It's not unusual to hear people refer to trading stocks as no different than going to Vegas. They are right. Gambling isgambling [sic]," Cuban wrote in his blog at the time. "The question really is, which gives the opportunity for a better outcome?"

"When you think about betting on sports, there really is far better information about your local sports team than there is about any local business in your market. The local papers cover the team every day. The localTV station gives a report about every game. There areradio stations who cover them for hours at a time [sic]," Cuban added. "That's far better than we get from public companies."

Swalsh, the HFTs are competing with other HFTs. The HFTs are not after our position size... If you pay attention to the screen, you should be able to understand what they are doing.

Understanding what they are doing and being able to act before it are two different animals. The developer is not trading that way from my conversations with him. Most of his trades are based on the 5 min delineator with the Primary (30 min) and Secondary (daily) delineator factored in for .50 SPY swings.

If you don't think the HFT have access to the entire "book" as well as having figured out the net position of the day traders (to crush) then maybe you have yet to fully comprehend how corrupt Wall Street is. Money + No Rules = Marked Cards

I assume you have HFTAlert running. Have you been able to figure out when they are going to do something, or only when they did something? If you have been able to tell with some degree of certainty when they are about to buy or sell I would love to see an example. I've gone snow blind trying to discern when something might happen. Absent the privileged information they have as well as having acted milliseconds before we even see it, to me I am only watching a ball game being played out and I don't know if the batter is going to strike out or hit a home run.

What? That doesn't even make any sense. Profit off of what? So far, the best that I can see is who is doing what at times. Calling a ball game is not playing in it. I asked you if you (CORRECTION: WaveRider) are seeing a way to predict what might happen next and you told me to join the gang of criminals. So your answer is essentially that you don't see how to profit from it either. And if we could, they would have an algo jumping us on the pattern with a 2nd derivative.

OK, I'm back. a nice bull bar here, bears now need pray because the push down didn't make a lower low, so if a strong rebound here, then the low was in! so bears need really pray loud here.

I said this the other day but probably forgot to add that the reason they hate Americans now is that they believe we profited from selling them crap. The average Greek doesn't understand that GS, et al, screwed us all. They were American Institutions. I wish Anthony Quinn were alive to comment on this one!
