[quote="taggard"]I don't like calling people losers, but people who commit suicide are losers.

Taggard,

As an MD who was severely depressed from age 8 to 10, I feel great empathy for you and your family! I've come to believe that we are all here in this life, to learn. And that we may grow as spiritual entities. And, of course, not all of us do. What becomes of someone who does not grow?

Have a great weekend!

Actually I was waiting for SPY to hit around 131.60 (which I guess it might have it that for a millisecond, looking at the LOD ... ??) then panicked when it starting bouncing hard -- almost turned into a loss!

[quote="Al_Dente"]THANKS TAG
If u want to elaborate more on this, I’m all ears:

“”””that cognitive dissonance has a face. . .and you must make a friend of cognitive dissonance.
Cognitive dissonance and confusion must be your friends””””

the simple version is the nurofinance stuff that suggests that one sure way to improve trading is to sustain two idea at once that happen to be inversely related to the subject under discussion.

a more complex perspective is that we are all to one extent or another the product of past and present learning. yet the future is always different. history does not repeat as much as rhyme. I visualize change as a spiral as opposed to a circle. so we are in the same cycles but from a higher (or lower) perspective and thus not the same.

our present state of mind is generally seen as "logical" and the inverse view is often seen as "total bullshit". and you can see this all the time in the market or even on this board to one degree or another.

yet if we pay close attention we are continually wrong to one degree or another (or if you prefer "only right to one degree or another"). so we can--if we wish prove that our existing perception which appears logical and correct is often wrong.

what to do with this?

we cannot just discard everything we know. yet we simply cannot trust it. we must find a different way to hold our minds in attention.

in fighting if you grab somebody very hard with your whole hand--you place your self at risk for a counter move. so the idea that one firmly holds something--is actually risky in fighting (if you you are messing with anyone good) the same problem exists intellectual arenas. We know from history that everything tends to be either disproved absolutely or disproved in the sense that it is only a partial explanation. (so string theory doesn't disprove sub atomic particles--but man the game gets a whole lot bigger what with the 9 million other dimensions)

so we want to hold our ideas more gently. they are such things as dreams are made on. they are not rock like--they are more like feathers and the slightest change can lead to them floating off.

an exercise to do this is to simply think both things. such as "never before in history has housing falling in price all over the USA at the same time for a long period of time" this was an absolute bed rock truth--that turned out to be a feather ONLY BECAUSE everyone believed it at the same time.

to invert it is simple. you balance the idea "housing cannot fail" with the idea "housing can fail". now the first part of this is grim--you sit there with the whole planet going the other way. The second part is you and 5 other guys are all high 5ing. So the experience of cognitive dissonance is emotionally difficult in at least two ways.

1. we are social--and it's tough being the only dude at the party with one idea. i had a guy actually throw down on me once at the gym when i suggested that (in early 2001) there was going to be a period where bank shorting would work. Other people laughed at me about the housing (i sold everything in 2001 which was far too early (sigh) but the value of the properties actually went lower than i sold them--and the poor dudes that bot them are suffering. The last one at a dinner where i suggested (this was silicon valley) that a marriage breakup could have been forecasted by stock price (orcl) the whole table of couples jumped on me--and then amazingly 3 years later all broke up after their stock declined by roughly 75%

PLEASE understand these are NOT "i am smart" ideas (notice the timing on the land stuff) these are just examples of social events where i was crazy enough to offer the inverse view--which was constructed with only the idea that everyone was on one side of the row boat--as opposed to carefully calculated knowledge of some future event.

2. we are dependent on our own beliefs to take action AND IT FEELS A WHOLE LOT BETTER TO MOVE WITH CONVICTION LIKE IN THE MOVIES. this is the really hard part--you have to be willing to live with confusion and the lack of absolutes. Personally i think that is what is real--and the other stuff just feels better--but that's just me.

invert everything you can get your hands on--down to what you eat drink where you drive (find different ways to drive to the same coffee shop). when finding a way of doing things such as a style of fighting invert it to find out how you are going down (if you like wing chung take a look at jiu jitzu. if you like war movies go to romantic comedies and try to find parts of your self in the hideous stories. what ever you hold treat it like a real fight (so hold with the thumb and first 2 fingers and be ready to let go the second the hold is not a good idea.

grasp your world lightly as joni mitchel said to a guy who wanted to marry her--if you try to hold onto sand--it runs out your fingers

Golden in time
Cities under the sand
Power, ideals and beauty
Fading in everyone's hand

Give me some time
I feel like I'm losing mine
Out here on this horizon line
With the earth spinning
And the sky forever rushing
No one knows
They can never get that close
Guesses at most
Guesses based on what each set of time and change is touching
Guesses based on what each set of time and change is touching
Guesses based on what each set of time and change is touching
