The original play was by Christopher Marlowe, published in 1604. There is a wonderful scene when the devil proposes to show Faust the seven wonders of the world. Faust said, “but first, I want to see that beauty whose face launched a thousand ships”, who is, of course Helen of Troy.
I had an opportunity to use this while teaching advanced biomedical students the theories of bioenergetics. The first exam contained a 20 point question asking if they knew basic concepts and definitions of thermodynamics. “This is for information only; if you don’t know the answer, just say so”.
The last question was “What is the definition of a millihelen?” The answer, of course, is “that amount of beauty required to launch one ship”.
