the post at close re short at close make money in 6 days (i think it was) seems reasonable. ranges on qqq and spy can last 3-8 days (most of the time) so really what we have is in effect "a sideways trend" that "trend" will end but we don't know when. Cobra's aapl stuff indicates a 2nd move up (i see this as a hint) --and i think the problem selling the market is that "the move after the move is seen as up by many". On other topics--i urge you if you are a hard core short or long here--to take a deep breath and try to pay close attention to your feelings. having really strong feelings in the middle of a range after a huge move up in the middle of aug is suspect. obviously we have to have 1-4 down days--but these don't need to be large at all. also while seemingly less likely look at the period 3-19 to 3-26 on qqq. notice that failure to go down--caused a spike up which was sold--that in turn caused a hit of the 10 ema daily--and that in turn finally got you the high.
my point being if you really want a short the ideal play in a range is a false breakout to the upside (just as to get long a false breakout to the downside in a range works great). and so far we don't have this.
finally consider being cautious about "it's an election year" or "the fed is buying" common wisdom. for one thing the real key is the euro zone. for another in strategy you don't want to confine your enemies to a box canyon and then attack--because they have nothing to lose and will take chunks out of your guys. (as is happening in the euro zone) the euro zone actions so far HAVE BEEN A TREND lasting 3 years. this trend will surely end--but what see is people trying to forecast this exact period. i think that's a huge mistake--just as it is a mistake to assume a thing about qe3.
all you have to do to have some serious impact is have china usa and euro zone act roughly at the same time. which is actually not all that unlikely. if you get concerted stupid action at the right time you can get a strong move up--despite the obvious bogus nature of the individual lame moves.
likewise it's pretty clear that obama has little clue and little control--beware this "they are controlling things. those who dislike obama should realize that should Mitt get in--and should congress be skewed in his direction--the eventual results could be very poor IF (and this is a huge if) the current advice of his financial guys is followed (these guys actually think/or did a couple months back--think the austerity in euro zone which is obviously not ideal for a 3-5 year period--is a good thing). Please guys--it's not if one or the other guy wins that is the point--it's the common wisdom right now about what happens with political fed stuff that is worth considering. we know from the past with near absolute certainty that whatever everyone believes now--will get inverted later--it's useful to keep this in mind.
all these points above have a underlying theme--easy does it with anticipating outcomes in ranges which can be thought of as psychic sideways trends--whatever is going will continue till it ends--and (most importantly) when it ends it will look different. in the mean time you have fine range trading movies porn great literature or in my case right now running on the beach to use up that juice created by confined intense trading.
